Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1 FAQS - Which is better? Worth updating? Release dates...

When did Squarespace 7.0. come out?

Squarespace 7.0 was released in 2014. It was a hugely updated version from 6.0 and an exciting release for all users new and old to Squarespace.

When did Squarespace 7.1 come out?

Squarespace 7.1 came out in early 2020. Most sites on Squarespace are 7.1 these days, and all our Squarespace templates are on on version 7.1.

How long will 7.0 be supported?

It’s likely that there are tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of 7.0 Squarespace sites still out there. The actual numeral 7 is an indicator too with it being the same large number as the latest version - 7.1. If that was version 6 it would haven’t meant a more legacy product. Whilst this isn’t official from Squarespace you will be safe for a good few years running version 7.0 sites - it’s unlikely that 7.0 will become unsupported anytime soon.

How do I know if I'm using 7.0 or 7.1?

If you navigate to Website > Pages and at the foot of the sidebar you will see either version 7.0 or 7.1. If you are on 7.0 you will also see the template name. 7.1 doesn’t show the template name as it’s more free-flowing than having set templates, like 7.0.

Are all SS 7.1 templates the same?

You can mix and match as many different blocks as you want. You choose to start off with a template but every site can be built from any template, as you have access to every block element.

How old is Squarespace?

Squarespace is 22 years old, it came out in 2003. This is written in 2025.

Is 7.1 worth it?

Yes, it is. You cannot do everything on Squarespace, it is suited to smaller sites that require uniquely designed pages. For a few hundred pounds a year, you get a lot of options and you will look better than 95% of small business websites out there, no matter what platform they are on. Fluid Engine gives anyone the power the create dynamic and exciting layouts without knowing any code. Those freelancers and Squarespace agencies that can code, take things further and can produce a unique and engaging site.

Does Squarespace 7.1 have index pages?

There are no index pages per se like other platforms, but you can do something along the same lines by using the “blog” and “portfolio” collections. These act like listing pages which then link off to pages with more details on your required content.

Which is better Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1?

7.1 has Fluid Engine and a host of other improvements. It’s highly recommended that you update to 7.1. There is even an update tool which make things very easy indeed. Whilst I stated earlier that 7.0 won’t be deprecated or unsupported anytime soon, it’s a good idea to switch to 7.1 as there are many other benefits.
